On Ikaria, a mountainous island in the Aegean Sea, the pace of life draws the attention of visitors and researchers alike. The island has been studied for the longevity of its residents, but its story cannot be reduced to one food or a secret recipe. Researchers explore a combination of habits, including diet, physical activity and social relationships.

Staying connected

A conversation with neighbours, a family visit or a village celebration may seem ordinary. On Ikaria, these encounters are an important part of community life.

A study published in 2021 involving 71 residents aged 90 or older found that almost 78% had daily social contact. Researchers noted strong family solidarity and community participation. These observations do not prove that socialising alone explains longevity.

Movement in everyday life

In the same study, around 72% of participants reported moderate or high levels of physical activity. This describes the group studied, rather than the entire island population. For us, inspiration might begin with walking more often and choosing everyday activities that get us out of our chairs, adapted to our individual abilities.

Simple food at the heart of the table

The Mediterranean eating pattern emphasises vegetables, legumes, fruit, whole grains, nuts and olive oil. Fish complements this pattern, while red meat and sweets are eaten less often. The overall habits and variety of foods matter more than any single “miracle” ingredient.

On Ikaria, that simplicity takes shape in soufiko, a traditional vegetable dish, leafy vegetable pies and the flavours of local herbs.

Bringing a little Ikaria into our lives

We can make room for a meal without a phone, a meeting with friends or an unhurried walk. We can cook with vegetables more often and give time to the people we care about.

Ikaria offers inspiration, not a guarantee of reaching a particular age. Observational studies describe the habits of long-lived people; they cannot fully separate the contribution of lifestyle from heredity and other factors.

At EL GRECO, we are inspired by the Greek pleasure of sharing a table. Join us at 72 Bulevardul Basarabia, Bucharest, for good food and time with the people you love.
